Jennifer very much wanted to be in the "Cool Group" at school, now that she was in sixth grade. One day on the playground at recess, not long after the start of the school year, she started talking to Libby, who seemed to be the "most Cool" girl in the school.
"Libby, would you like to come to a sleepover at my house? I'll ask Molly and Cynthia, too. It'll be really cool."
"Sure, why not? I've got nothin' else to do. What day?"
"Well," temporized Jennifer, who knew that she should have cleared this with her parents before asking Libby, "I'll have to check at home about what day. Tell you tomorrow, Okay?"
Jennifer brought up the sleepover almost as soon as she got home. "Mommy," she asked, "can I invite some kids over for a sleep-over?"
"What kids, Jennifer?"
"Libby, and Molly and Cynthia. They're really cool. They're my new friends. Can I have them over, please?"
"I don't know. I'll talk about it with your father, and we'll see what he says." Lisa replied, a bit wary since these were new names to her, and she didn't know either the children or their parents.
"But, Mommy, they're really cool, and I really wanna get to be better friends with them, an'--"
"Jennifer! Stop whining! I told you that I'd talk to your father about it. Now, the subject is closed until later. Is that clear, Young Lady?"
"Yes, Mommy." Jennifer could see that pushing any further was not a good idea at the moment.
Later that evening, Charlie was a bit dubious, too. "Just who are these friends of yours, Jennifer?" he asked. "I don't think we've met them, or their parents, before."
"They're nice, Daddy. Anyway, I just want to have my friends over. What's wrong with that? We won't get into any trouble!"
After a good deal of further discussion, Charlie called Libby's parents. They seemed nice enough, and had no objections. The same was true of the parents of Molly, and Cynthia. Charlie and Lisa were still a little dubious, but Jennifer really wanted this, and there was no real reason to refuse.
So Jennifer was given permission to issue the invitations, for Friday night. Not being a school night, the girls could stay up a bit later than usual with no major problems.
Libby, Molly, and Cynthia were duly invited and accepted. They weren't as enthusiastic as Jennifer had hoped, but then they never got very excited about anything. Jennifer guessed that was part of being cool.
That evening, Jennifer began making plans for snacks, and games for four people. She was not including Robin in on any of her plans. When this became clear, Charlie spoke up.
"Just a minute, Jennifer. Your sister sleeps in this house, too. And she goes to the same school as you and your friends. She will be a part of this sleepover, so you had better include her in your plans."
"But Daddy! Libby and the rest are my friends, not Robin's. She doesn't even like them very much. This is supposed to be my sleepover, not Robin's. Can't she visit Uncle Jack, or Cousin Maggie, or something, that night?"
"Jennifer! That is way out of line. You are not going to even suggest kicking your sister out of her own house, and you are going to include her in your plans, or there will be no sleepover."
"Oh all right. I suppose you want me to include Baby Stephen, too? He'd be about as much fun, anyway." (Steven was not quite two years old.)
"Jennifer! How could you say such a thing about your sister? You will apologize at once!" Charlie was furious, and his tone made that perfectly clear.
Jennifer realized that she had gone too far. "I'm sorry, Robin. I didn't mean to insult you, it's just that."
Charlie had had enough. "That is not the proper attitude at all, Jennifer. Be quiet. Go up to your bedroom and wait for me. You can apologize properly later."
Jennifer knew that she was in trouble. She went slowly, but she went. She knew better than to do anything else at this point.
After she had been waiting in her room for a quarter hour or a bit more, Charlie came in. He sat down on the bed and made Jennifer stand in front of him. "Your sister is an important member of this family, just as you are. You are not to reject her, or try to exclude her from events here at the house. And you are not to insult her. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Daddy, I'm sorry."
"For your rudeness to your sister, I am going to spank you. Perhaps this will help you to remember to treat her properly from now on."
Charlie pulled Jennifer over his lap, bared her bottom, and gave her a good sound spanking. He spanked repeatedly until her bottom was all pink, and then red all over. Finally he was done.
"Now I want you to stay here for one half hour. After that, I want you to come down and apologize properly to your sister. Then you will come back up here and stay in your room for the rest of the evening. And you will behave yourself if you want this sleepover to go ahead."
"Yes, sir," Jennifer said, looking down.
Charlie started to leave the room, but after looking back at his daughter, he decided to stay for another minute. He took a deep breath and sat down again on the edge of Jenn's bed.
"Baby?" Charlie prodded.
"Yes, Daddy?" she sniffled.
"Are you okay?" Charlie asked, sympathetically.
Jenn nodded. "I'm okay. It's just that. It's just that, well..."
"What is it, honey? Please tell me," Charlie said.
"It's just that Libby and Molly and Cynthia are cool. And I have to make a good impression on them. And, well, Robin, . . . she isn't cool, not that I don't think she's cool. But others don't. She doesn't want to be. Do you understand, Daddy?"
Charlie nodded. "I do, baby, but you have to remember that these girls are not as important to you as your sister. They may come and go, but Robin will always be here. Do you understand?"
Charlie waited to make sure Jennifer nodded. She did. "I understand, Daddy. And I'll try to include her. Okay?"
"Yes, try hard, please. Okay, I'm going to help your mom put Stephen to bed. I want you in pajamas and reading on your bed. We'll come to tuck you girls in at 9:00."
Charlie started for the door. This time he was stopped by Jennifer. "Daddy, you're not gonna make us go to bed at 9:00 the night of the sleepover, are you?"
Charlie frowned. "No, of course not, Jenn, but let's not forget the lesson you just learned, about having a good attitude?"
"Yes, sir, sorry," Jenn mumbled.

The next few days followed without interruption or problems. Robin was so sick of hearing the plans for the sleepover; she almost wished she WAS going to be at Maggie's that night.
Friday, at school, Jennifer asked Libby and the others if they were all set for that night.
"Yeah, we're ready," said Cynthia, "what are we gonna do?"
"Yeah, what?" Molly asked.
Jenn smiled. "Don't worry, we'll have lots of fun. I promise."
That night, Jennifer was running around making last minute preparations. She was driving everyone crazy with her orders. Finally, Lisa had to sit her down to have a serious talk with her.
"Jennifer, Daddy will be home at 8:00. If I have to tell him anything bad, he will spank you, whether your friends are here or not. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, Mommy!" Jennifer said. "Don't worry, you won't have to. I'm almost done."
"Thank god," Robin thought to herself.
The girls began arriving at 5:00. Lisa had ordered two cheese pizzas to be delivered at 6:00. Jenn gave the girls a tour of the house. At 6:00, they wolfed down pizza and soda. They watched a little bit of television, and hung out in the living room, eating chips, and other junk food.
Finally, Lisa said, "Jennifer, I think you and Robin should take the girls up to the playroom and hang out up there. I'm going to be putting Stephen to bed soon, and you would have to be quieter if you stayed down here."
"Okay, Mommy," Jenn agreed. "Come on, girls, let's go."
"I'm going to put my pajamas on," Robin announced.
Jenn looked at her sister like she was crazy. "Are you serious? It's only 7:30, Robin!"
"Yeah, but it IS a sleepover party, so I think it's a neat idea!" Libby agreed.
Jenn was shocked that Libby agreed with Robin's suggestion. Before she knew it, all the girls were changing, as well. Jennifer decided to join them. She was only sorry that it had been Robin who suggested it, and not her.
After putting on their pajamas, all the girls arranged their sleeping bags in the twins' room, but then went back to hang out in the playroom. There was a giant queen-size bed, and several beanbag chairs to sit on. There was also a stereo, which Jennifer turned on quietly to a local top 40 radio station.
Libby looked around the room, taking it all in. She noticed a lot of toys and board games, and wondered if they belonged to Robin or Jennifer or both.
"Well, now what?" she demanded of Jennifer.
"Let's watch a scary movie," Jennifer suggested, "Carrie is on tonight."
"That sounds like fun," agreed Molly. Cynthia seemed in favor of the idea, too.
"You know I never like those movies!" Robin protested. "Why don't we play a game instead? How about Flinch(TM)? That's real good with lots of people."
"Party pooper! You just don't want the rest of us to have any fun. I wanna watch Carrie!" Jennifer said.
"I am not! Games are more fun than a movie any old time!" Robin retorted, her voice rising.
Just then, Lisa came upstairs and stuck her head in the door. "Keep it down, girls," she said, "and I don't want any fighting. Work things out peacefully for yourselves, or you will all be in trouble. Don't make me tell you again, if you know what's good for you."
"Aww right, Mommy," Jennifer whined
"Jennifer! Is that how you speak to me?"
"No, I'm sorry, Mommy. We'll be good. It's just we want to watch a movie, and Robin doesn't want to."
"Which movie, Jennifer?" Lisa asked
"Well, uh, Carrie, Mommy."
Lisa frowned and said, "I think not. I don't want you waking up in the middle of the night with bad dreams. Try something a little less scary, okay? Now I have to get back to Stephen, so behave yourselves." With that, Lisa left again.
After a little more discussion, they did play Flinch(TM). The game went on for quite a while. Over it, the girls talked about all sorts of things -- other girls, what they did the previous summer, boys, and school. Eventually the subject of the teacher's room came up. This was kept locked, and none of the kids had ever been inside. School rumor painted it as a fantastic place, on no more foundation than lack of knowledge.
"I know how we could see in," said Molly.
"How?"
"We could make up one of those periscope things, you know, with mirrors, and look through the glass over the door."
"That's a lot of work, and we could only see a little bit of the room, anyhow. That's no good," said Libby in a belittling tone of voice.
"I could get the keys to it, and we could sneak in and see for ourselves," Jennifer proclaimed.
"How could you get the keys?" Cynthia asked in a tone of sneering disbelief.
"That's for me to know, and you to guess. Shall I do it?"
"I dare you to!" Libby chimed in. She could see possibilities here.
"Okay, but if I do, you all have to come with me. I dare you back." Jennifer said.
"Okay, we will." Libby said. And Molly and Cynthia agreed.
"I don't think this is such a good idea," Robin said. "We could all get in a lot of trouble. You know we aren't supposed to go in there."
"That's what makes it an adventure. If you don't wanna come, you don't have ta, but you better not tell. You have to promise not to tell, right now," Jennifer said, fiercely. The other girls, particularly Libby, seemed to back her.
"Okay, I promise not to tell. But don't blame me if you get in trouble," Robin said.
A little later, Libby went downstairs to get some more to drink. As she was in the kitchen, the telephone rang. Charlie, who had just come home, answered it.
"Hello, Jack. How are you and Joan?"
"Jennifer and Robin are having a sleepover tonight, with three of their friends. Otherwise there's not much going on. Yes, Lisa and Stephen are well."
"Is that so?"
"Okay, we'll be over a week from Sunday. That'll be great. See you then."
Libby pricked up her ears at this conversation, out of simple curiosity. She couldn't make out the words on the other side of the conversation, but she thought she recognized the voice. (It was, in fact, Jennifer and Robin's "Uncle" Jack Levine, who was also the principal of the school that the girls attended. This relationship was a secret, to avoid teasing and accusations of unfairness by the other students.)
Libby wondered why the principal, if that's who that was, would be calling to make plans with Jennifer's parents. As Libby was walking out of the kitchen, she heard voices in the hall, and decided to walk the other way back to the stairs. In doing so, she passed through the living room. On top of an end table by the couch, were some family photographs.
Curiosity getting the best of her again, Libby leaned in close to see the pictures. Imagine her surprise, when she saw, none other than her elementary school principal, appearing with his wife, and three kids. She knew they were his kids, 'cause she had seen them around at school.
And who was in the picture with them? Jennifer and Robin and her parents and the baby. What was his name again? Libby couldn't remember. But it didn't matter. What did matter, was that Mr. Levine had his arms around both of the twins. A little closer than your average principal. They must be related, thought Libby.
But how could she be sure? She had to know. She started looking for other pictures. Oh, and the Clementes did not disappoint her -- for on another table, there was a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Levine, and Mr. and Mrs. Clemente. Attached to the picture was a sticky note. It read, "To the best brother in law, ever, Happy Birthday, Charlie!"
That's it! That's the proof she needed. All right! Libby silently slapped herself on the back. I can use this information. Haha, so that's why Jennifer said she could get the keys. Libby finally went back upstairs. The other girls had wondered what happened to her.
After the game, Robin said she was tired. All the girls agreed. They went into the twins' room and got settled in their sleeping bags. Charlie and Lisa came up to say goodnight to the girls.
"Don't stay up too late talking, now, you hear?" Charlie declared.
"We won't, Daddy," Robin answered. She was so tired; Jennifer figured she'd be asleep before they even turned out the light.
"You heard me, Jennifer?" Charlie asked, going closer to her.
"Yes, Daddy, don't worry!" Jennifer exclaimed.
After Charlie and Lisa left the room, Libby said, "Boy, Jennifer, your parents sure are strict!"
"I know," Jenn said, reluctantly. "I feel like I'm on a leash most of the time."
"Well," Libby began, "that's why it'll be fun when you get those keys. Show us how tough you can be!"
"Yeah, well, I don't know," Jenn replied. "Maybe Robin was right, maybe it's not such a good idea, after all."
Molly said, "You're not backing out on it already, are you?"
"Yeah," said Cynthia. "This could be the all-time greatest sixth-grade prank. We'd be famous!"
"Yeah, we'd be the only kids to ever walk into the teacher's room, EVER!" Libby responded.
"You're right, no problem. I can still do it," Jennifer responded, even though her heart wasn't in it.
The girls talked for a long time. Robin had fallen asleep when Charlie and Lisa had left the room. Jennifer did not heed her father's warning and stayed up way too late. In the morning, after all the girls had cereal for breakfast, their parents came and picked them up.
As she was leaving, Libby whispered to Jennifer, "We'll meet at the flagpole after school on Monday. Make up some reason to your mom why you have to stay after, okay?"
Jennifer gasped. "Um, I don't know about that, Libby. Like you said, my parents are pretty strict."
"Jennifer, let's put it this way. If you're not at the flagpole at 3:00 on Monday, with those keys in your hand, I'll tell everyone at school that Mr. Levine is your uncle!"
Jennifer's jaw dropped to the floor. "H-h-how'd you know?" she asked.
"Doesn't matter how, but that I do know. And I'm counting on you to get us into that teacher's lounge. So, whatever you have to do, whatever you have to say to your parents, you'd better do it. Especially if you want to be in the "cool" group!" Libby sneered.
Then she ran off down the driveway, toward her father's car, waving back to Jennifer and yelling, "Thank you" to the Clemente's.
"Well, you were right, honey, your friends are very nice," Charlie said.
"Polite, too. Every one of them thanked us," Lisa agreed.
"Yeah, nice. And polite," Jennifer said glumly.
Charlie looked at his daughter. "What's the matter, baby? Everything all right?"
"YEAH!" Jennifer snapped.
"Excuse me?"
"Sorry, Daddy, I'm just tired, is all."
"Hmm," Charlie said, "and just how late did you stay up last night, young lady?"
"I don't remember," Jenn admitted.
"Well, I think somebody better go take a nap, before somebody gets into big trouble!" Charlie warned.
"Do I hafta?" Jenn asked.
"Yes, you do. Now go!" Charlie said, smacking Jenn lightly on the rear to send her on her way.

Monday morning arrived, just like it was supposed to. Jennifer had hoped she would go to sleep Sunday night and wake up Tuesday morning. She was hoping to just skip Monday all together. She was so nervous, there were butterflies in her stomach. She almost asked if she could stay home from school, but then realized she would really "catch it" from Libby, when she got back.
The school day was very long and tense for Jennifer. Libby didn't say anything to Jennifer at all in class. At lunchtime, was another story.
"So? You got them?" Libby whispered to Jenn.
"Yeah, it wasn't easy, but I got 'em," she replied.
"How'd you do that?" Molly asked.
"A magician never reveals her secrets," Jennifer laughed.
Cynthia laughed, too. "Yeah, maybe it's better that we don't know HOW she got them, anyway."
"Okay, so we're all set to meet at the flagpole at 3:00, right?" Libby asked everyone.
"Yeah, okay," Jenn said. She still had to think of something to tell Robin about why she wouldn't be going home with her. She couldn't say she had detention, 'cause her parents would call to check.
At 3:00, Robin met Jennifer by the flagpole. She saw Libby and Molly and Cynthia walking over.
"Hey, how come they're coming this way?" Robin asked, pointing.
Jenn looked to see where her sister was pointing, and said, very nonchalantly, "Oh, I don't know. Maybe they meet their parents here, too. Um, Robin, I'm not coming now. I told my teacher I would stay after school and help clean up this big project that we did. Tell Mommy I'll get a ride home from Uncle Jack. Okay?"
"Okay, I'll tell her," Robin said. She started to walk away toward her mother's car. Then she turned, and walked back. "Are you sure you're okay, Jenn? You didn't get in trouble, and are afraid to tell Mommy, did you?"
"No, it's nothing like that. Really," Jenn said, trying to hurry Robin away, before Libby and the gang got to the spot. "I'll be fine. Tell Mommy I'll be home around 4:30, unless Uncle Jack has to stay later. Okay?"
"Okay, Jenn," Robin said. But upon walking away, wasn't too sure she believed her sister.
As Robin got into the car and told Lisa that Jenn was staying after, she turned and saw Jennifer talking to Libby, Molly, and Cynthia. Then, Robin watched, as the four of them, walked back toward the school building.
"Oh, no!" Robin thought. "I hope they're not still doing that teacher's lounge thing."
"Ready?" Lisa asked.
"Yeah, I'm ready," Robin muttered, adjusting her seat belt. Robin shook her head as Lisa drove away.
Inside the school, Jennifer, and the gang, stood outside the teacher's lounge. They looked up at the big letters on the door.
"Just think, girls, we'll be the first kids ever, to go inside here," Libby said in hushed tones.
Jennifer pulled out the key ring, and stumbled to find the one labeled, simply, "lounge". She tried to put it in the lock, but found her hands wouldn't move.
"I can't do it, I'm too nervous," she said.
"Oh, gimme that!" Libby said, grabbing the key from Jennifer. "I'll do it!"
All the girls looked up and down the hallway again, to make sure there was nobody around. Then Libby inserted the key in the lock, and turned. The door gave way, and Libby pushed it open.
They couldn't believe it. There they were, inside the teacher's room at last.
They hurried in and closed the door. Cynthia went over to the wall, and flipped on the light switch. The girls looked around, and took everything in. There were two long tables, with chairs around them. There was a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee machine, and a sink in one corner and a pay phone in another. There was a large cork board with a lot of flyers and notices pinned to it with push-pins. In the middle of one table was a glass vase with a bunch of artificial flowers.
Other than that, on first glance, the girls didn't see much else.
"C'mon, this can't be it. Let's look around," suggested Libby.
"I don't know, Libby. Maybe we should just leave. You never know who might still be in the building. I don't want to get caught in here," Jennifer said.
Libby turned on Jennifer. "Look, squirt. I didn't come here just to take one quick glance and then leave. This is our big chance. We're going to be famous. Come on!" She paused. "Unless, you want to leave now. Then, of course, you can say goodbye to being in the "cool" group."
Jennifer didn't know what to do. She knew it was wrong to be there, but then again, she had already broken so many rules, what was one more?
"Okay, I'll stay. What should I do?" Jenn asked.
"Let's rearrange the flyers on that board," suggested Libby.
So they did. They moved the notices so that they spelled out "Kids Rule". This meant overlapping them, and folding some, so that they were not very readable as flyers any more. Jennifer was not happy about this, but she figured that no real harm was being done.
"Now what? I'm bored," complained Molly.
"Let's look in that cupboard over there, beside the microwave. There might be some neat stuff there," said Cynthia.
They looked and all that was there were coffee supplies. They knocked some of the sugar packets out onto the floor, but that wasn't very fun. They lifted the chairs onto the tables, which gave a weird effect, but that wore off after a moment. Jennifer was starting to think that this wasn't much fun at all, particularly considering the risk involved.
"I know," said Libby, "Let's fill up that vase with water, as if the flowers were real. They'll never figure that one out."
So they carried the vase over to the sink. It was made of thick glass, and it was heavy. They filled it three-quarters full of water, not without getting a lot splashed on the outside -- the vase was awkward to hold , and the sink was not really designed for this kind of thing. Then they started to carry the vase back to the table.
"Oh! Oh No!" cried Cynthia, as her grip slipped.
The vase smashed to the floor. There was water and broken glass everywhere.
"We better get out of here, fast!" said Libby.
"Yeah" "Right" agreed Molly and Cynthia. Jennifer was open mouthed, unable to speak at all.
As they were leaving --in a hurry -- Libby told Jenn, "You lock that door again. Then they won't find it so quick; we gotta have time to get away."
Jennifer complied. Delay seemed like a VERY good idea to her.
The other kids all lived in walking distance to the school, or bike distance, anyway. They split up. Jennifer headed for her uncle's office. She figured that she had to catch a ride home with him, or her mother would know she had lied, and she would be in more trouble.
Jennifer went into her uncle's office She saw that he was alone -- his secretary had gone home.
"Uncle Jack?"
"Jennifer?! What are you doing here?"
"I stayed after to help clean up, and then to study. Can I get a ride home? I'm sorry that I forgot to ask you earlier."
Jack was a bit put out by this, but he couldn't very well leave her alone at the school.
"All right, Jennifer, but you really ought to ask me before you count on a ride like this. I have about another half hour of work to do, so you just sit quietly and study, please."
"Okay, Uncle Jack. I will."
After a little more than the promised half hour, Jack finished up. He led Jennifer out to his car.
"Jennifer, I have to pick up some cleaning and bring it home right away for your Aunt Joan, so you will have to wait at my house for a few minutes before I take you home."
Jennifer couldn't believe her ears. This gave her exactly the chance she needed to sneak the keys back.
Jennifer waited in the car while Jack stopped at the dry cleaners and picked up a dress for his wife. Soon they were at Jack's house, and Jack told Jennifer to come in and wait for him while he brought the dress up. (Joan and Jack were going out and she needed to start getting ready.)
Jennifer came in and sat in the living room while Jack went upstairs. No sooner had he gone than she scurried into the study, intent on replacing the 'borrowed" keys. In fact she was so intent that she didn't hear her uncle come back downstairs, in a hurry to get Jennifer home and pick up the baby-sitter, until he was looking in at her opening the desk drawer and taking the keys out of her pocket.
"Jennifer Clemente! What are you doing in my desk?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to be continued....nothing like a cliffhanger, huh?

"Jennifer Clemente! What are you doing in my desk?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Uhm, Uncle Jack, I was just." Oh my god, Jennifer thought. How could I be caught returning the keys? She slipped the keys back into her pocket, hoping her uncle wouldn't notice.
"You were what, young lady?"
"I, uh, um, I was just looking for a piece of paper, you know, to leave Joseph a note," Jennifer tried.
"I don't think so. Try again," Uncle Jack said, more sternly. "Let's start with what you just slipped into your pocket!"
So he had seen, Jennifer thought. She didn't know what to do. Her lower lip started to tremble. Jennifer knew she was in very big trouble.
"Well, I'm waiting. And I don't have much time. Your aunt and I have a benefit to go to tonight, that I can't miss. So, spill it," her uncle growled.
Jennifer knew what she had to do. Even though she would be punished, she knew there was no way out of this. She had been backed into a corner, and if she tried to lie her way out, she knew it would backfire on her. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the keys. She held them out to her uncle and said, "I, kind of, swiped these the other day."
Jack looked confused. He took the proffered keys from his niece and looked at them. When he realized what they were to, his face turned from confusion to surprise.
"These are my spare set of keys to the school. What do you mean you swiped them the other day? Jennifer, you stole these keys from me? What on earth for?"
Jennifer realized her uncle was more angry now than surprised. He was beginning to understand that his niece had done something very wrong.
"I can't believe this!" he shouted. "You'd better start talking, young lady, and don't leave anything out, if you know what's good for you. Because I don't really have time for this. I might just start spanking and ask questions later."
Jennifer was thinking; actually what she was doing was stalling for time. She didn't know where to begin. What should she tell her uncle? She knew that lying now would not be a good thing; that it would come back to haunt her later on. She also knew if she left anything out, and word got back, she would be in even more trouble later.
"I don't know where to start, Uncle Jack," she began.
"I'd say from the beginning. And then lead up to why you stole these keys."
"Well, you see, it was a dare. We were talking about the teacher's lounge, and we all wondered what was inside. Everyone was talking about how we could find out. And I," Jennifer stopped. She was afraid to continue.
"And you what? Go on, please," Uncle Jack said, impatiently.
Jennifer sobbed. "I, I said, I could get the keys." Then Jennifer burst into sobs.
"I see. So, basically, you used our relationship to get something to show off to your friends?"
Jennifer hadn't thought about it that way, but when her Uncle Jack said it, she knew he was right. It was all she could do to nod her head. She continued to cry.
"So, now that you had these keys, then what?" he asked.
"I, I, this is hard for me, Uncle Jack. I want to tell you the truth, but I know I'm gonna be in big trouble. My daddy always says to tell everything up front."
"That's very good advice, Jennifer. I suggest you follow your daddy's advice. Now tell me what you did with these keys."
"I used them, to open the teacher's lounge. After school today. It was a dare," Jennifer began, but was cut off when the phone rang. Jack ignored the phone, and looked to Jennifer to continue, but then he heard Joan call for him to pick it up.
He put his hand up to Jennifer to hold on while he answered the phone. "Hello?" he said into the receiver. "Yes? Steve? Yeah, what's the matter? WHAT?"
Although Jennifer did not know it, Steve was the head custodian at the school. He was calling to report to Jack about the vandalism in the teacher's lounge.
"Hmm, I see," Jack said. "Okay, do me a favor, Steve. Don't touch anything. No, no, don't clean it up. Not yet. Give me twenty minutes. I'll meet you out front. Okay, yeah, see you in a few."
Jack hung up the phone and turned to Jennifer. "Go on, Jennifer."
Jennifer knew by his end of the conversation that her uncle knew about what was in the teacher's lounge. She knew that lying now would not be a good thing. She told him all the things that "she" did. She didn't tell him about Libby or the others.
"You've been a very busy, little girl this afternoon, haven't you? Well, I guess I'd better call your parents to meet us at the school. We'll go take a look at your handiwork."
"Now?" Jenn asked. "Oh, Uncle Jack, please don't call my daddy. He's gonna be real angry."
"Jennifer, you are in very serious trouble, young lady. Pleading with me right now is not in your best interest. Now sit down while I call your mother and your father!"
"But Mommy can't come. She has the baby!" Jennifer whined.
Jack just shot Jennifer a menacing look. "I suggest you don't add whining to your long list of transgressions. Now sit!" Jack commanded, pointing to the black, leather couch in the corner of his study.
While he was dialing, Joan came to the study door. She was very surprised to see Jennifer sitting in there. "Hon, Jennifer's still here? What's going on?"
Jack sighed. He put the phone down for a second. "Joan, we're going to be late to the benefit, if we even go at all. We have big problems here. I can't go into it right now. I have to call your sister and Charlie."
Joan nodded. She waited to hear what Jack would say to her sister. Jack picked up the phone again and redialed the Clemente's number.
When Lisa answered, Jack said, "Hi, Lisa, it's Jack."
"Oh, Jack? I was just going to call you. Is Jennifer with you?" Lisa asked, brightly.
Jack looked over at his niece. She was sitting on the couch, looking like she wanted to disappear right into the cushions. He nodded, and then said into the phone, "Yeah, she's here. Listen, Lisa, we have big problems. I need you to meet me at the school in about ten minutes. Can you do that?"
Lisa said, "What's the matter, Jack? Is Jennifer okay? What happened?"
"I can't really get into it over the phone, but I'll tell you this. Your daughter is in very big trouble. She just got caught committing school vandalism."
"School vandalism? Jennifer? Oh, my god, okay, I'll be right there," Lisa said, hanging up the phone.
As Jack hung up the phone, he looked over at Joan. She raised her eyebrows. "One down, one to go," Jack said, picking up the phone once again. This time he called Foodtown in Merrick and asked to speak to Charlie Clemente.
When Charlie came to the phone, he said, "Charlie here, how can I help you?"
"Charlie, it's Jack."
"Oh, hi, Jack. What's up? Is everything okay?"
"Not really. Jennifer's in trouble. I need you to meet us down at the school. I just called Lisa and she's on her way over there, too."
"Uh-oh, what did Jennifer do?" Charlie asked, slightly amused. Not that it happened daily, but every now and then, Charlie got a call about Jennifer and school.
"I can't really get into it, Charlie. But let me tell you, this is not something to take lightly. She is in serious trouble. We found her vandalizing school property."
Jack took a minute to let that sink in before he continued. "Look, I really have to go. Meet us there as soon as you can, okay?"
Charlie recovered and found his voice. "Vandalism? Jennifer? I can't believe it. There must be some mistake, Jack."
"I wish there was, Charlie. I really do, but there isn't. See you in a few." He turned to Jennifer. "Come on, you, let's go."
Jennifer reluctantly followed her uncle back to his car. She felt lucky that her bottom had been spared thus far, but knew that was soon going to change. She dreaded meeting her parents' stares.
Meanwhile, Lisa had hung up the phone and then stared at it in disbelief. "I can't believe this," she whispered. "What won't that girl get into?" Then she called up the stairs, "Robin!"
"Yes, Mommy?" Robin said, running down the stairs.
"I need to go out for a bit. Can you stay here with Stephen? By yourself?" she asked, hesitantly.
"Sure, Mom, what's the matter?" Robin asked.
"It's your sister. She's gotten herself in some big trouble. I have to meet your uncle at the school," Lisa said, distractedly. Then she said, "You don't know anything about it, do you, Robin?"
"Um, what'd she do, Mommy?" Robin asked. She wouldn't outright lie to her mother, but hopefully she could avoid the subject.
"I'm not sure. Something about vandalism. Do you know what that is?" Lisa asked, as she rushed around the house, getting ready to leave.
Robin nodded. "Yes, Mommy. It's when you break stuff or touch stuff that you shouldn't?"
"Yes, that's right. Now, Robin, I'm going to stop by and tell Mrs. Rosenthal next door that you are home by yourself with the baby. If you need anything, call her. Her number's on the fridge."
"Okay, Mommy. Don't worry, we'll be fine." Robin heaved a sigh of relief. In her rush to get things ready, her mom hadn't repeated her question of what Robin knew or didn't know.
After Lisa left, Robin was thinking about Jennifer. "So, they went through with their plan, after all. She is so stupid!" Robin thought to herself. "And she lied to me!"
Charlie pulled up in front of the school. He saw his wife's car, and walked up to it. She had just arrived, as well. Charlie kissed Lisa and asked if she knew what was going on.
"No, Jack was quite cryptic," Lisa admitted.
"Yeah, with me, too. Oh, there he is!" Charlie said, pointing to the front steps of the school.
That was where Jack was speaking with Steve, the custodian. Charlie saw Jack nodding his head and speaking softly with the other man.
"Oh, good, you're here. Let's go inside together, and see what the damage is," Jack said to Charlie and Lisa as they approached.
Jennifer could not meet her parents' gazes. She knew they were probably staring at her. She walked behind all of them with her head bent down. When they got to the teacher's lounge, Steve pushed the door open. They all walked in, expectantly.
They looked around. They saw the sugar packets spilled onto the floor, some chairs overturned, and some put up on the tables. Then they noticed all the water and the broken glass. Jack had to push his sister-in-law out of the way.
"Lisa, look out, there's broken glass there," Jack stated.
Lisa moved out of the way. She looked down and saw the artificial flowers laying right where they had fallen.
As Jennifer watched from the doorway, she wanted to disappear into the woodwork. Even though it looked the same as when she had left a couple of hours earlier, she now saw the room through the adults' eyes. She wondered if they noticed the bulletin board with the flyers rearranged.
Apparently her uncle had. Because in a matter of minutes, Steve came back to the room and handed Jack a Polaroid camera. She watched in horror as he took photographs of the bulletin board, the sugar on the floor, the flowers, the broken glass, and the water. He took pictures of the chairs, as well.
When he was finished, he turned to Jennifer, and said, "You did all this, young lady?"
Jenn nodded. "Yes, sir."
"Alone?"
Again, a simple nod.
Jack shook his head. He was thinking, "How could she have done all this by herself and still been at my office asking for a ride at twenty minutes to four?"
Out loud, he said, "Are you sure?"
Then, Jennifer started to cry. She knew she was in over her head, and she didn't know what to do.
Jack sighed. "Let's go to my office and talk. Come on, let's go!" Jack led Jennifer to his office. Charlie and Lisa followed. Neither of them had said a word to their daughter yet.
When they got to Jack's office, they all took seats on the black, leather couch, identical to the one Jack had at home.
"Now, Jennifer, suppose you start from the beginning? Tell us exactly what happened," Jack remarked.
So Jennifer filled her parents in on all she had told Jack before. She got to the part about actually swiping the keys.
"Now, when did you take them, Jennifer?" Jack asked.
"Um, yesterday, sir, when I came to your house on my bicycle," she admitted.
She looked to her mother. Lisa was frowning. Jennifer knew what her mother was thinking; she had lied about where she intended to go on her bike. She knew she was facing a mouth soaping just for that.
Jennifer continued, until she had told all, up to the time when she asked for the ride home. She left out anything having to do with Libby and the other girls. She told the story as though she had acted alone.
Finally, Charlie could bear it no longer. "What were you thinking, Jennifer Lynn? How could you do such a thing? You know better!" he shouted.
"I don't know, Daddy," Jennifer said and began to cry all over again.
Charlie grabbed Jennifer and turned her around. He swatted her rear end several times and said, "You know better than to answer like that, young lady. YOU DO KNOW WHY YOU DID IT AND I WANT TO KNOW RIGHT NOW!"
"Oww! Daddy! I just wanted to see what was in that room, and then. um. to sorta surprise the teachers when they saw it. The glass was an accident. I dropped it when I was trying to fill it with water. I'm sorry, really I am -- I didn't mean to make a big mess, just a surprise."
"Okay, I think we've heard enough for the moment." said Jack, "Let's start to deal with this. You know that you are in serious trouble, young lady?"
"Yes, Sir, I'm sorry, really I am. I'll never do it again, really I won't. Please don't punish me, please..."
"Stop whining and begging, Jennifer", Charlie ordered. "You will be punished. Now don't make it any worse for yourself than it already is."
Then Jack said, "Jennifer, you broke into part of the school where you were not supposed to be, and vandalized it -- that means you messed it up for no good reason. Those are very serious offenses against the school rules, and I am going to punish you just the same as I would punish any student. The matter of lying to me and taking advantage of our relationship is a private one, which we will deal with at a later time, at my house. Your parents will also, I imagine, want to punish you for your lies to them and your general misbehavior today. But for your school offenses, I am going to paddle you with the school paddle. After that, you will clean up the mess you made. And after that, you will be suspended for the rest of the week."
"Now I am going to ask you one more time, was anyone else involved? I find it hard to believe that you were able to do all that in the time you had. Well, Jennifer?" Jack demanded.
"O.Only me, there was nobody else involved, just me, I'm so SORRRRRY!" Jennifer wailed.
"Very well then, it is time for your school paddling. Charlie, would you help hold her down, please?"
Jack bent Jennifer over his desk after lowering her jeans. While at home he usually spanked bare bottom, as Charlie and Lisa did, school policy was "over underwear" and he intended to treat Jenn exactly like any other student. Charlie held her hands, so that she could not stand up or put a hand back, which might be dangerous.
Jack got the School Paddle out of his desk. It was made of oak. The blade was ten inches long by four inches wide with a double row of quarter-inch holes drilled on opposite sides of the center line, an inch and a half apart. It was a formidable spanking instrument.
Jack drew the paddle back and gave Jennifer a sharp stroke with it, right on her sit-down spot. Then he did it again, and again. After a dozen SMACKs she was crying hysterically, and was a well-spanked little girl.
While she was crying and slowly regaining her composure, Jack called Steve, the custodian on the intercom.
"Steve, would you please bring a dust ban and broom, a bucket and mop, and a set of heavy work gloves to the teachers lounge? I am going to have our little vandal clean up after herself. [Pause] Thank you very much. Her parents will lock up the room, and you can lock the doors and leave -- they can get out with the panic bars. Thanks Steve, I'll remember this. Bye."
Jack turned to Charlie and Lisa, "Would you, or one of you, please stay to supervise her at her clean up, and then take her home? Here are the spare keys she used. Please bring them back to me tomorrow. I can't leave her unsupervised, obviously, but I really do have to get back home if at all possible. As you heard, there will be proper cleaning equipment, and gloves to protect her from the glass."
"That's all right," Charlie said, "I will watch her. Lisa, you better get back home to watch Robin and the baby. I will bring Jennifer back home when she is done."
"Thank you, Charlie" Jack said, handing Charlie a key. "This is the key that locks the lounge."
They all left Jack's office and he locked it behind him. Lisa and Jack headed for the parking lot, while Charlie escorted Jennifer back down the hall to the teacher's lounge. There, Jennifer had to sweep up the broken glass and the spilled sugar packets, and mop up the spilled water. Charlie helped Jennifer put the chairs back in place, noting silently that she simply could not have put them up on the table alone. Together they restored some order to the bulletin board -- at least it didn't spell out anything now. Then they left the room. Charlie locked the door, and drove Jennifer home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to be continued...

Dinner that night was a rather tense and silent meal at the Clemente's. Jennifer was wondering just how much more punishment she was going to get. She wasn't very hungry. Robin was wondering if her part in the original plans would come out. She wasn't a heavy eater either. Charlie and Lisa were wondering just what to do about their wayward daughter. Only little Stephen was his natural, outgoing self.
After dinner, Charlie said, "Jennifer, please go to your room and wait there. Mommy and I have some talking to do, and then we are going to come up and see you. Robin, could you stay down here and keep an eye on Stephen while you do your homework, please?"
After a while, Charlie and Lisa went up to Jennifer's room. They looked very grim and upset. Jennifer was very nervous. She was sobbing already.
"I'm sorry, Mommy and Daddy, I really, truly am sorry."
"I'm sure you are, but that isn't good enough," Charlie said. "Your choices today were very bad ones indeed. Do you understand all the things that you did wrong, and just how much trouble you are in?" Charlie paused, while Jennifer nodded.
"First, you lied to Mommy about where you were going on your bike. Then you stole Uncle Jack's keys and lied to him about what you were doing in his house. Then you lied to Robin, and through her to Mommy, about what you would be doing today. Then you used the stolen keys to break into the teachers' room. Then you made a mess there, partly on purpose, and the rest while doing things you knew were wrong. Then you lied to Uncle Jack about what you were doing at school so late, and you tried to lie to him again when he caught you with the keys. That is a lot of lies and a lot of misbehavior, over more than one day. This wasn't an accident; this was a plan. And you knew it was wrong, because you tried to cover it up by lying at every turn. Isn't that correct, young lady?"
"Well, um", Jennifer saw the expression on Charlie's face and decided that she had better answer right away, "Yes, Daddy, I did all that, but I really didn't think of it that way, and--"
"Do you understand why we are so upset with you, Jennifer?
"Yes, Daddy, I think I do. I'm so sooooo sorrrrryy, Pleassee, Daddy--"
"That's enough out of you, Jennifer Lynn. Don't add whining to a list that's already too long."
"Yes, sir."
"Your mother and I have talked this over, and we think that what you did requires a severe punishment, lasting several days, just as your naughty behavior lasted for a while. You are grounded for two weeks. No telephone, no TV, no stereo, no visitors, no after school activities, and no outside play for that time."
"You are suspended from school for the rest of the week. That is four days and five nights. On EACH of those five nights, you will get a mouthsoaping for your lies, and a hairbrush spanking for your misbehavior, just before bedtime. And you will be going to bed early, not long after dinner. And you would do very well not to get into any additional trouble during this week. Oh and one more thing -- no dessert for you for the rest of the week at dinner, and no cookies at lunch. Do you understand this punishment, Jennifer?"
"Yes, Daddy, but--"
"I am not going to listen to any argument about this -- you already admitted what you did. Now come along, its time for tonight's mouthsoaping."
Charlie led Jennifer into her bathroom, where she had to open her mouth for a bar of soap and sit on the toilet lid with it in her mouth for ten whole minutes. Then he led her back to her bed. He put her between his legs and took down her pants and panties, and then pulled her over his lap. Soon the hairbrush was turning her already sore bottom bright red again. She was crying and sobbing freely before he was done.
When he stopped the spanking, Jennifer just lay still and sobbed for a while. Then she did the "spanked girl dance" all around her room. Then she wound down and just sobbed some more.
"Jenn, baby," Charlie said at last, "We still love you. We will always love you, no matter what you do. But when you mess up, we have to punish you. That helps you learn not to do it again. And baby, you really messed up big time with this one."
"That's right, darling," Lisa chimed in, "we love you very much and don't like to punish you. But when you need it, you will get it. Now come here," and shortly they were in a three-way hug.
"Okay, Jennifer, bed time. Into your PJs and into bed, and I mean NOW," Charlie said when the hug finally broke up. "And tomorrow night, I want you to come up here right after dinner, get in your PJs and wait for us."
Jennifer looked sad but knew better than to argue. Soon she was in bed with the light out, and her parents were back downstairs.
* * *
"Mommy, Daddy, is Jennifer in bad trouble? What did she do?" Robin asked when Charlie and Lisa came back downstairs. Robin had heard the spanking, of course.
"Your sister lied and misbehaved at school. She is grounded for two weeks and suspended from school for the rest of the week. She will be going to bed early for the days she is suspended, and she will be getting other punishments, too. I'm afraid you will have to use the playroom or the living room for any after dinner reading or homework, and you will have to bring home her school work. Please don't tease her; she feels bad enough already."
"Okay, Daddy. She must be in BIG trouble."
"Yes, she is, but it isn't any of your affair -- unless you know something about what happened?"
"No, Daddy, I don't know what happened, and I didn't know that Jennifer was going to do anything bad."
This was at least technically true, since Jennifer had told Robin that the plan was off, but Robin was uneasy about being questioned further. Her parents, however, were in no mood to discuss this further -- they were tired and disappointed in Jennifer. Charlie knew that he would have to go to work early tomorrow to finish up the things he had had to leave undone today.
* * *
The next day at recess, Robin confronted Libby and her friends.
"Did you go in the teacher's room with my sister, like you said you would at the sleepover? Did you get in trouble?"
"What's it to ya, kid? You weren't there. Anyhow I didn't get into any trouble -- yet -- and you better not try to get me into any, see?"
"I see all right," Robin said, and stormed off.
* * *
That afternoon, Robin had to go down to the office to pick up Jennifer's school work for the day. She waited a bit. Then the secretary told her to go into Mr. Levine's office (her Uncle Jack's grown-up name).
"Hello, Robin. Here is Jennifer's school work," said Jack, handing her a folder with written assignments from Jennifer's teacher.
"You know, I still can't believe that she wrecked the teachers room so badly by herself, but she won't admit to anyone else being involved. Do you know anything about this, Robin?" Uncle Jack asked her.
"Well, Uncle Jack."
"Robin Clemente, if you know anything about this I want you to tell me -- right now."
"Well, I don't really know, but--"
"Robin!"
"There were these girls at a sleepover at our house, Saturday, and they were talking about how cool it would be to get into the teacher's room, and Jenn said she knew how to, but I told them they'd get in trouble, and the next morning Jenn said they had dropped the idea 'cause it was too risky, like I said, so. I didn't think they'd really DO it." Robin rattled off until she ran out of steam.
"Robin, just who were these girls?"
"Molly Bing, Cynthia Caston, and Libby Stalky. Libby was the one who really wanted to."
"I see, thank you, Robin. Now you better run along back to class," Jack said.
As soon as she had gone, Jack used the intercom to talk to his secretary. "Would you find out which classes these girls," and he repeated their names, "are in, and get them down here, right now, please?"
* * *
When the three girls were in his office, Jack spent a minute looking them up and down.
"There was some trouble in the teacher's room last night. Do any of you know anything about it?"
"No sir" "Not me" "No way" they said, all at once.
"That's funny, because the custodian says he saw you leaving that area around the time the damage was done, and none of you had any after school activities yesterday."
"Oh man, I'll bet that Jennifer told," Libby said. Molly and Cynthia just stared at her.
"No, strangely enough, she insisted it was all her own doing. But now I think that the cat is out of the bag. I am going to give you the same punishment that Jennifer got. A paddling, and four days suspension."
"A paddling? You can't be serious!" Libby stated, attempting to stand up.
"You sit right back down, little miss. My secretary is on the phone right now," he paused to look at each girl, "to each of your parents."
Just then, the intercom buzzed. Jack pressed the button and said, "Yes?"
His secretary answered, "Mr. Levine, I have contacted all three girls' parents, and after explaining the details, they gave the go-ahead. Would you like me to come in to be your witness?"
"Yes, please do. And thank you," Jack said into the intercom. Turning back to the girls, he said, "There, now that that's settled, we can get right down to business. Which one of you young ladies would like to be first?"
None of the three stepped forward, so Jack pointed at Molly, and motioned her to the desk. He bent her over it and raised her skirt, and the secretary held Molly's hands. Jack raised the school paddle, and brought it down hard in the middle of Molly's seat. After the first SMACK Molly yelled. After the fifth, she was shrieking, and by the end of her dozen she was limp and sobbing.
Cynthia was treated the same, except that she was wearing jeans instead of a skirt, and Jack lowered them before he bent her over the desk.
Jack suspected that Libby was the ringleader, which is why he left her to the end. She also got a dozen SMACKs, but hers were perhaps just a touch harder than Molly's or Cynthia's. She yelled louder then the others, and struggled more, which didn't do her any good at all.
After the three paddled girls had had a few minutes to cry themselves out and collect their senses, Jack again addressed them.
"I am very disappointed in what you did. Vandalizing school property is a serious offense. Your parents will be here to pick you up shortly, and you are each suspended until next Tuesday. I will arrange to have your assignments sent home, and I expect you to turn them in, properly done, when you return to school.

The week went slowly for Jennifer. It was a bummer being suspended. It also didn't help that every night that week, she got a hairbrush spanking and a mouth soaping. She knew she deserved it for what she had done, but it didn't make it any easier. Also, Robin was bringing home lots of work for her to do. Jennifer felt as though she were doing more work at home that week, than she had done in all the years of elementary school put together.
She also was unhappy about not seeing much of her sister. She didn't see Robin during school, of course. After school Robin had activities, or was playing outside with friends, where Jenn couldn't go. After dinner, she got her spanking and mouth soaping, and then went right to bed, while Robin stayed up doing homework downstairs or in the playroom. By the time Robin came to bed, she was usually asleep. This left only mornings and dinnertime for them to be together. Jennifer was missing the time she usually shared with her twin sister. She was also realizing just how much she depended on her twin's presence.
When Saturday morning arrived, Jennifer slept until noon. She was exhausted from all the crying she had been doing. She was still grounded, but at least the physical parts of her punishment were over. Her parents let her sleep late, but later in the day they had plenty of chores for her to do, to keep her busy.
That night, when Charlie came home from work, he went in to say good-night to the girls. It was 9:00 and Jennifer was told to be in bed by then. Robin was also in bed already, having been exhausted from a day of playing outdoors with her friends.
"Hi, girls!" Charlie said, after having knocked.
"Hi, Daddy!" Robin said warmly, getting up to hug her father. Charlie worked the entire day on Saturday, and hadn't seen the girls since the night before.
"Hi," Jenn said glumly.
Charlie ignored Jennifer's moodiness. He knew the reason why. "Now, girls, don't forget, we're going to Aunt Joan and Uncle Jack's tomorrow. Jennifer, I'm lifting your grounding for one day, since this has been planned for awhile."
"I don't care," Jennifer announced. "I don't wanna go anyway."
"Excuse me?" Charlie asked, raising his eyebrows.
"I said I didn't want to go," Jennifer repeated. "I was hoping to just sleep late, and finish up my homework."
"Well," Charlie said, "sitting down on the edge of Jennifer's bed. "I'm afraid, young lady, that you have no choice in the matter. We are going to Aunt Joan and Uncle Jack's tomorrow, and you are coming with us. We are not going to let you stay home alone."
"But Daddy!" Jenn whined.
Charlie just looked at her crossly, and held up his hand. "Don't!" he said. "It won't do you any good. You're going. Now," he began, taking the book Jenn was reading out of her hand, and placing it on the floor beside her bed, "it's time for you to go to sleep." He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Good night, Jennifer."
Charlie got up and walked over to Robin's bed. "You going to sleep now, too, lovey?"
Robin nodded. "I'm tired, Daddy."
"Okay, good night, sweetheart," he said, kissing Robin on the forehead. "See you girls in the morning."
At that, Charlie left the room, closing the door behind him.
Usually, the girls chatted when they went to bed, but not this night. Robin fell asleep as soon as Charlie left the room. Jennifer wasn't tired. She contemplated turning the light back on and reading her book. But no, that was not a good idea. Not after the week she just had. Instead, Jennifer just laid there and thought.
Mostly she thought about what it would be like to see Uncle Jack the next day. She knew he must still be pretty angry at what she had done. They hadn't "talked" yet, but Jennifer knew it would not be pleasant. She knew Uncle Jack would punish her. Her poor bottom! She had finally gone a whole day without a spanking, and she kind of liked the feeling. Oh well, she thought, there's no use denying what's going to happen. She just hoped she and her uncle could get past this. They had had a very good relationship before this happened, and Jennifer hoped they could get back to it.
Sunday arrived quicker than Jennifer thought could be possible. Again, her parents let her sleep late. They were expected at their cousins' at noon. Jenn woke up about eleven and headed straight for a shower. She was dreading this day with all her might. She considered whining and saying she didn't feel up to it, but knew that was not the route to take.
They all packed into the car and headed over to Joan and Jack's. The whole family was going to be there. Robin was looking forward to seeing Tabitha and the gang. Technically, they weren't related by blood, but Darren (Tabitha's father) and her dad, Charlie, had been friends since childhood. Also, Tabitha was related by blood to her cousins, Joseph, Jody, and Patrick, so she considered her a cousin.
Jennifer hadn't been to the house, since the day her uncle had caught her with his keys. She wasn't looking forward to this day at all. Once there, Robin and Jennifer went to find all the kids. Jennifer wasn't into the partying mood so much, but she figured it would be better to hang with the kids, then to seek out her uncle.
The day went fine. It was a glorious, autumn day, and was still warm enough outside, to barbeque. Jenn, actually, had a great time. She didn't speak to her uncle, at all. Maybe she was wrong, she thought to herself, maybe he won't punish me.
Later, after the Stevens had said their goodbyes, and the kids were inside watching a video, Jack turned to Lisa and Charlie. The four of them, Joan included, were sitting outside on the deck, right outside from the family room. In fact, they could hear the Disney music as it blared out of the t.v.
"Listen, I need to talk to you two," Jack said seriously.
"What? What's going on?" Charlie asked, all at once, concerned.
"I didn't tell you this, but Robin came to see me earlier in the week," Jack supplied.
Lisa said, "Did she? What about?"
"Well, she said she came just to pick up Jennifer's homework, but I think she had more on her mind than that," Jack suggested.
"Why? What'd she say?" Charlie asked.
They were speaking in rather, hushed tones. None of them wanted the children to overhear. Charlie had to lean in close to hear what Jack said next.
"Excuse me? What did you just say?" Charlie queried.
"I said, that Robin told me who else was involved in the teacher's room vandalism. In fact, I caught, and punished, all three of them," Jack said.
"Three others?" Lisa asked.
"Yes, Libby, Molly, and Cynthia. You recognize those names?"
"Well, yes. They were all invited to out house last Saturday, for a sleep-over," Lisa stated.
Jack nodded. "Yes, well, apparently, they talked that night about how to get into the teacher's lounge. That was when Jennifer boasted that she could get the keys."
He looked at his brother and sister-in-law. They were shocked.
"And you're telling me, that Robin knew all this?" Lisa asked.
"Well, she said she didn't know that they were going to go through with the plan they hatched up that night. Robin told me she told Jennifer and the others that it would get them into trouble. She also said that Jennifer had told her the plan had been canceled," Jack concluded.
Charlie said, "Well, I cannot believe this." He turned to Lisa, "Hon, this just adds more lies to the equation." He starts counting on his fingers, "One, she lied about being the only one involved, before and after she was found out. Two, she lied to Robin about stopping the plan, and three, she's been lying all along."
Lisa added, "And let's not forget Robin's lies. She told us she didn't know anything about what Jennifer was up to." She turned to Jack at this point and said, "Jack, why didn't you tell us about this, earlier in the week?"
Jack shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know, Lisa. I just wanted to have a few days to decide how I was going to progress with this. I told you, I punished and suspended the other students, but..."
"But what?" Joan asked, finally getting into the conversation. She had remained quiet during most of it.
"Well, it's kind of a sticky situation. I had to cover the fact that Jennifer stole the keys. I mean, I couldn't very well tell the superintendent that one of the students involved just happened to be my niece, went to my house, and stole the keys! Believe me, it was bad enough explaining why the teacher's lounge door had remained open long enough for four children to get in and do damage."
"I don't understand, Jack. What does this have to do with why you didn't tell us about Robin's involvement?" Charlie asked.
"Well," Jack began again, "I also had to tell Libby and the others' parents that someone saw their kids leaving the school at the key time, and that's how we were able track them down. Actually, that's what I told them, the kids I mean, and they just blurted out confirmation that they were involved. But still. Listen, I know you two don't really understand all the ins and outs of this, but I just felt that I had to protect myself. I really didn't need any more rumors floating around, to draw attention to this case. Okay?"
Charlie and Lisa just nodded. They didn't really understand, but they tried.
"Now I hope you don't mind, but Jennifer and I have some unfinished business to take care of, in my study," Jack said, casually standing up.
Again, Charlie and Lisa nodded. They knew what their brother-in-law had in mind. They weren't surprised at all that Jack intended to punish Jennifer for her actions. They had long since agreed with Jack and Joan that each couple had the right to punish the other's kids for misbehavior while visiting.
Jack opened up the sliding glass door that led into the family room. He went over to the couch and said, "Hey, guys, how's the movie?"
"Shhhh," they all said.
Jack tiptoed over to Jennifer and tapped her on the shoulder. She looked up, surprised to see her uncle. He motioned for her to follow him. Jennifer, all of a sudden, felt the butterflies again.
"What's up?" she tried, casually.
"What's up, is that you and I have something to discuss, in my study," Jack answered her.
"Right now?" Jenn asked.
"Yes, right now. Come on," Jack said, taking Jenn's hand and leading her out of the family room, and into his study.
Once inside, Jack turned and closed the door. "Have a seat," he told her.
"No, that's okay, I'll stand," Jennifer said.
"Jennifer, sit down now, while you still can," her uncle said, a bit more forcefully.
"What do you mean, Uncle Jack?" Jennifer asked.
"Come on, now. Don't play all innocent with me, missy. You and I need to discuss what happened here last Sunday and Monday."
Jennifer sat down then, and began to cry. "Please, Uncle Jack, I already told you I was sorry. Please, don't punish me anymore. I had a very bad week."
Jack sat down, too. He took Jennifer's hand in his and said, "I know, baby. I know it was a rough week for you. But, you brought it on yourself. You know that, right?"
Jenn just nodded. She didn't trust herself to speak.
"Is there anything you want to say? Or should I tell you what I think?" he asked.
Jenn nodded again.
"Okay, here's my take on the subject. You and your friends were pondering the idea of what was inside the teacher's room. You decided to show off that you could get the keys. Jennifer, do you realize what you did? Forget about the actual stealing for a minute. We'll get to that in a second. You took our relationship for granted. You used the fact that we were related, to make yourself look good in front of your friends."
"Now, I don't know what kinds of friends these are, that would let you do something like this, but... anyway, I was very hurt, that you took our relationship and used it for your own selfish purposes. You also caused your family a lot of shame, and you caused yourself a lot of shame."
"I was very disappointed in you, young lady. And hurt, too. Now, is there anything you want to say for yourself, before I continue?" Jack asked.
Jenn shook her head back and forth. "I'm just so sorry, Uncle Jack. I don't know why I did it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done it."
Boy, that was the understatement of the year! Jenn thought. Did she really expect her uncle to take note of something that dumb?
"Jennifer, I don't think you thought things through. You must have known that this would all work out badly. And stealing! My goodness, Jennifer. I thought you'd learned your lesson about that years ago! I am very hurt, and disappointed in you, young lady. And I'm afraid I'm going to have to punish you!" Jack concluded.
"Yes, sir," Jenn said sadly. "I know what I did was wrong. I'm sorry I almost ruined the secret, too." (Jenn was referring to the secret that Jack was her uncle. They had kept it successfully for years.)
"Well I managed to keep that covered up, although it took some work. But you said 'almost.' Didn't you tell your new friends about our relationship?"
"No, I didn't. I said I could get the keys, but not where. When they asked, I said that was my secret, and one of them said it might be better not to know."
"Well, I'm glad to hear that, anyway. But that doesn't change that you used our relationship, and that you stole from me, and that you lied to me when I caught you. Now I am going to punish you for that. I hate to, but I don't feel that I have any choice. Do you understand why I am going to spank you, Jennifer?"
"Yes, Uncle Jack. I guess I deserve it. Please, just get it over with, okay?"
Jack stood Jennifer between his knees, and took down her pants and panties. Then he pulled her over his knee and started to spank her. As was his usual custom, he spanked her hard, in the middle of the bottom. Right on her sit spot. He spanked her many times, and her bottom was getting red. She was crying.
Then Jack stopped spanking. Jennifer was happy that the spanking was over. She was also a little surprised. She had expected a longer, harder spanking than she had gotten from her uncle, after all the things she had done, and how mad he had been about them. Then he spoke.
"Jennifer, what you did demands more than just a hand-spanking. Particularly since it was also a violation of the special trust that is supposed to be between us, as godfather and goddaughter. So I am going to finish your spanking with something more."
Jack reached up onto his desk and picked up a wooden ruler. Jennifer saw what he was doing, and wailed, "No, Uncle Jack. Please not a ruler!"
Her uncle paid no attention to her outcry. He started to spank her with the ruler, hard.
<Whack!> "You do not <Whack!> come in my house, <Whack!> to steal. <Whack!> You do not steal <Whack!> anywhere. <Whack!> You will not <Whack!> trade on our relationship <Whack!> to make yourself <Whack!> look good <Whack!> to your friends. <Whack!> You will not <Whack!> lie to me <Whack!> ever again. <Whack!> <Whack!> <Whack!> <Whack!> <Whack!>
Jennifer was limp over Jack's lap, crying like a much younger girl. Jack stopped the spanking. For a while it was wordless, then she was able to talk again.
"Please Uncle Jack.I'm sorry, I'm so very sorry. Please, no more Uncle Jack, please no more. . ."
"Okay, Jennifer. Your spanking is over. I'm sure that you are very sorry indeed, and I trust that nothing like this will ever happen again. Come on."
Jack picked Jennifer up and hugged her. Then he carried her up to his own bedroom, where he tucked her into the bed. She was so worn out emotionally, that she fell asleep almost at once. Jack went back downstairs to talk to Charlie and Lisa again.
"Jennifer and I had our discussion, and she is taking a little nap upstairs. Our business is done with, as far as I am concerned."
Charlie and Lisa knew the kind of 'discussion' that Jack and Jennifer had had, and why she was napping. They had been through the same routine with her many times themselves. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to be continued...

The other kids finished their movie, and had some post-movie snacks. Charlie and Lisa were thinking that it was about time for them to go. Lisa went up to Jack to ask about Jennifer.
"Jack, I think it's time that we were on our way. Which room is Jennifer in?"
"Let me get her, please. I want to make sure that she knows that I'm not mad at her anymore."
"All right."
Jack stopped by his study to collect Jennifer's pants and panties, which she had left behind after her spanking. He went upstairs and woke her.
"Jennifer, honey, it's time for you to go home now. Here, Jenn, you will want to put these on," he said, handing her her clothes.
"Okay, Uncle Jack. You aren't still mad at me, are you?" Jenn asked in a tiny voice.
"No, Jennifer. You've been punished and it is all over as far as I'm concerned. I'm not mad anymore, and we can try to go back to the way things were before. Although, I must tell you, it might take me some time to trust you again. I'm sorry I had to spank you, honey, but you brought on yourself, you know."
"Yes, I know, Uncle Jack. I am really, really sorry, and I promise NEVER to do anything like that again and--"
"Yes, honey, I believe you. But now your parents are waiting for you downstairs, so come on, please."
"Okay."
Jennifer put on her clothes gingerly -- she was very sore. Then she turned and ran to her uncle, and hugged him fiercely.
"I love you so, Uncle Jack, and I'm very sorry. I'm going to try hard to gain back your trust."
"I love you too, Jennifer. I don't want anything to get in the way of that."
After a little while, Jennifer and Jack went downstairs, and everybody said their goodbyes. Before long, the Clementes were home again.
"Bedtime for you two," said Charlie. "But, Jennifer, we have learned that you weren't alone in your prank last week. It is too late to discuss it now, but we are going to talk about it tomorrow after you get home from school. And Robin, we understand that you knew a little more than you admitted to us. We are going to have a little talk about that, too. You can start thinking about what you want to tell us."
Robin and Jennifer were appalled at Charlie's words, but he wouldn't stop for a discussion, and they soon found themselves in bed, with the light out. Both of them were tired, but they had to discuss things before they went to sleep.
"Robin, you told on me, didn't you?" Jennifer accused.
"No, not really. When I went to pick up your first homework on Tuesday, Uncle Jack asked if I knew anything about it. You know how he can tell when we're lying and I just didn't dare -- so I told him about the plan at the sleepover. But I told him that you said it was canceled."
"Oh No! Did you tell him their names -- the other girls, I mean?"
"Yes, I did -- he insisted. And they've been out of school since Wednesday. I guess that they got suspended, too. Well that seems only fair. Do you think Mommy and Daddy are gonna punish me for not telling sooner?"
"I don't know, but I hope they do -- now that you've told, Libby and Molly and Cynthia will hate me forever, and this whole thing will have been for nothing."
"Well, if that's the way you feel, I'm not speaking to you."
Robin and Jennifer stopped talking and soon fell asleep. It was not a happy night for either of them.
* * *
As they got up the next morning, Jennifer said, "Robin?" Her sister turned away in silence.
"Please, Robin, I'm sorry about last night. I was sore -- Uncle Jack spanked me real hard -- and mad, and I said things I didn't mean, and -- well, I'm sorry. Really. I hope you don't get punished -- one of us in trouble is enough."
"Okay. I'm sorry I told the secret you were keeping, and I hope your 'friends' don't hate you, okay?"
"Okay. Friends again, Robin?"
"Friends."
They hugged before heading down to breakfast, for Jennifer's first day back at school after her suspension.
* * *
Jennifer got through the day all right, although she had to put up with a little teasing about her suspension, and some questions about what she did and whether she "got it" at home. Her teacher seemed pleased enough with the work she had done at home and which she handed in. She knew that she had gotten a zero on the math quiz that she had missed though, and that was not a happy thought, since math was not one of her best subjects anyway. She was glad that Libby, Molly and Cynthia were still out -- she was not looking forward to seeing them again tomorrow.
After school, Lisa picked Jennifer up. Robin was staying for Art Club, but Jennifer was grounded, and couldn't. When they got home, Lisa said, "We have some things to discuss with you when your father gets home, so try to get your homework done right away, okay, Jennifer?"
"All right, Mommy," Jennifer said with an unhappy tone in her voice. Wasn't she ever going to be out of trouble, she wondered? It was a very nice day, and she would have liked to play outside, but she knew better than to ask.
A while later Charlie came home, having picked up Robin after her art club was over. After Robin put her books away, Charlie called the twins into the living room.
"Girls, we need to talk. Jennifer, we have learned that the three girls who were here for your sleepover were involved in the trouble you got into at school, in spite of your repeated statements that you did it alone. Robin, we have learned that you knew about this, but didn't tell us -- in fact you denied knowing anything about it. Is that correct, ladies?"
"Yes, Daddy." "Yes, Sir," they answered with lowered voices and downcast faces. They were pretty sure that they were both in trouble.
"Is there anything you want to say for yourselves? Either of you? This is your chance to explain why you lied about this, or why we shouldn't punish you for it."
"Well, Daddy," Robin said, "I didn't really know what happened. There was talk about getting into the teacher's room during the sleepover, but only talk, and I thought that they weren't really going to do it. Afterwards, I wasn't really sure what happened, or who was involved -- it was just a guess. I told you that I didn't know what happened. You never asked me what I guessed. Uncle Jack kept asking questions until I had to tell."
"Robin! It sounds like your 'guess' was pretty solid. You knew that they had talked about doing something, and then that same thing was done. I think that was something you should have told us when we asked."
"And what about you, young lady?" Charlie continued, turning to face Jennifer. "Why did you say you were alone, over and over again? That was an out and out lie, wasn't it?"
"Well, Daddy -- yeah I guess so. But Daddy, I didn't want to tell on the girls. I was afraid that they wouldn't be my friends if I got them into trouble. I don't have lots of friends like Robin does, and I'm not smart like her. Fitting in is very important to me, Daddy, and if I told on the girls they would never accept me into their group. Anyway, since I wasn't concealing what I did, I thought it would be okay - kinda anyway."
"Well, Jennifer, that was not okay, not at all. That was a direct lie, when you were already in trouble and being punished for other lies. If you had said that you weren't alone but didn't want to tell on the others, we could have discussed it, but lying is absolutely unacceptable."
Charlie faced both of the girls now. "I want that to be very clear to both of you -- lying is not acceptable, not at all. To help make that clear, and help you remember that, I am going to punish both of you. Both of you will get a mouthsoaping. Robin, I am going to spank you in addition. Jennifer, you lied several times, so you will get a hairbrush spanking. Furthermore, your grounding is extended for four days. Robin, you are grounded for two days. I am very disappointed in both of you. Jennifer, I want you to wait for me in my bedroom. Robin, come with me."
Charlie led Robin to the bathroom, where he made her take a piece of soap in her mouth. He told her to wait for him there, and went to his bedroom. He took Jennifer between his knees, and took down her pants and panties. Then he took her over his lap, and spanked her long and hard with the hairbrush, scolding as he did so. When he was done her bottom was bright read and very sore, and she was crying loudly, lying limp over his lap. He let her cry it out for a bit, then stood her up and comforted her with a brief hug.
Then he led Jennifer to the bathroom where Robin was waiting, the soap still in her mouth. Charlie let her take it out and rinse her mouth. Now it was Jennifer's turn for the soap, which she had to hold in her mouth while sitting on the toilet on her bare, spanked bottom.
Then Charlie led Robin to her room, where she was quickly bared and taken over his lap. He only used his hand on her, but she was thoroughly spanked before he finished. After her spanking, he let her stay over his lap for a bit, then pulled her up into a hug.
"There, there, Lovey, it's all over. You are forgiven. I love you very much even when you don't act the way I would like, and don't you ever forget that. I am sorry to have to punish you, but when you misbehave I have to correct you. Now why don't you lie down for a little nap?"
As soon as Robin was tucked in, Charlie went to get Jennifer. When she too had rinsed her mouth, Charlie led her back to her room, hugged her and comforted her, much as he had done for Robin.
"And Jennifer, about what you said earlier, I think you have lots of friends, and you are very smart. I don't like you to doubt yourself. We will talk further about this later on. Okay?"
Through her tears, Jennifer nodded and said, "Yes, Daddy." "Now I want you girls to stay here until dinner time. Nap if you need to, or talk quietly, but no getting up. Cry it out - I know a spanking hurts and is hard to take. I will be back in a little while to get you for dinner. I love you both. Bye for now."
After a little while, Jennifer spoke. "Robin?"
"Yeah, what?"
"I'm really sorry, okay? I didn't mean to get you in any trouble. I should have listened to you in the beginning. I'm really sorry you got punished too. Please don't hate me."
"It's okay, Jenn, I don't hate you. But maybe next time you will listen to me and spare us both a lot of trouble?"
"Sure." Jennifer didn't know what else to say, and drifted off to sleep, followed shortly by her sister.
That evening at dinner, both girls sat on pillows, and were fairly squirmy even so. But neither of their parents commented on it.

The next day at school, Jennifer encountered Libby and the other girls at recess. Libby's tone was not friendly.
"What did you want to tell for? You got us in a LOT of trouble. My mom whipped me good," Libby said, accusingly, and Molly and Cynthia backed her up.
"Come on, I never told," Jennifer protested. "In fact, I got an extra hairbrush spanking last night for lying by saying that no one else was involved. I guess that someone else saw you, and told."
"Really?" Libby asked, and Jennifer nodded and looked very solemn while rubbing her still sore rear. "Okay then," Libby said, "I guess you can join the 'cool' group after all, but ya gotta come on our next adventure. That'll be in a couple'a weeks, when the fuss over this has died down, and they aren't watching us so close."
Jennifer wasn't sure that she wanted another adventure with these girls, considering how the last one turned out, but she really wanted to be in their 'group' so she nodded. She figured that she'd worry about the next adventure when it came up.
-The End- (Until the next story, "Kidnapped?")
