It was a Saturday afternoon. Lisa was out with Stephen, and her sister, Joan. The twins were having a double playdate at a friend's house, and Charlie had the house to himself. He was enjoying the peace and quiet by sitting in the living room, reading the paper, and watching television. He supposed he knew it was too good to be true.

Interrupting his relaxation, the telephone rang. It was Howard Rockwin, the father of Robin and Jennifer's friend, Ilyse (pronounced Elise). They lived down the block. Mr. Rockwin asked if Charlie could come by the house.

"Is there a problem, Howard? Are the girls misbehaving?" Charlie asked, crossly.

"Well," came the reply. "Something did happen. But I'd like you to come by and see for yourself."

Charlie sighed. He couldn't imagine what those girls had gotten into now. They were eleven years old, and always seemed to be up to some mischief or another. Charlie did not think he would make it through their teen years.

"Okay, Howard, I'll be right there," Charlie said, hanging up the phone.

Charlie grabbed his jacket. It was early fall, and the weather was starting to become chilly. Charlie walked quickly down the block. He walked through the freshly fallen leaves. He still liked the crunch sound they made when stepped upon.

When he got to the Rockwin's house, he saw Howard standing on the front steps waiting. He was about to walk up the driveway, when he noticed the sign. It said: Caution: Wet Cement.

Charlie quickly changed direction and began to walk on the grass around the driveway. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw something on the driveway. On closer inspection, he noticed hand and footprints in the middle of the driveway. He also saw the name ILYSE scratched into the driveway, as well.

Upon arriving to meet Howard, Charlie put out his hand and the two men shook. Charlie nodded over his shoulder back at the driveway and said, "I see. Budding pavement artists, have we?"

Howard nodded. "Well, as soon as I saw it, I called Ilyse down stairs. I had told her to stay away from the driveway. She said she didn't do it, and I believe her. So, Charlie, that means your daughters did it, but they are insisting they didn't."

Charlie became defensive; he wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because Howard was accusing Robin and Jennifer of something without knowing the full story first. "Well, let's talk to them. I suppose it is POSSIBLE that none of them did it -- there are other kids in the world."

Howard seemed to accept this, and said, "Okay, Charlie, come on in. I'll call them downstairs."

Charlie followed Howard into the house. Howard yelled up the stairs, "ILYSE! Girls! Come down here, please."

Ilyse and the twins bounded down the stairs. When Robin and Jennifer saw Charlie, they both said, "Hi, Daddy."

Ilyse said, "Hi, Mr. Clemente."

Charlie said, "Hello girls. Hello Ilyse. What is going on around here?"

Ilyse answered first. "Well, Mr. Clemente, we were playing outside, and then my mom called me for a few minutes, and when I went back out, Robin and Jennifer had written my name in the driveway."

Jennifer said indignantly, "We did not!"

Robin replied, "Honest, Daddy, it wasn't us."

Charlie looked at the twins and tried to figure out if they were lying. "Oh no? Robin, Jennifer, are you sure? If you didn't do it, who did? You were right there, weren't you?"

Robin looked at Jenn. "No, Daddy, we went in the backyard to play. Right, Jenn?"

Jenn hesitated, and then said, "Oh, yeah, right, we did, Daddy. Maybe some other kids did it to try to get Ilyse in trouble."

Charlie wasn't buying it. He looked at the girls and said, "I'm going to give you one more chance. Did you do this or know who did?"

Howard and Charlie watched as Robin looked at Jennifer, and Jennifer looked at Ilyse. Ilyse was shaking her head.

Jenn looked back at her father and said, "Hold on, Daddy, I have to talk to the girls."

Both Charlie and Howard raised their eyebrows as the girls conferenced in the corner of the room.

Ilyse said, "Don't you dare, Jennifer, you promised."

"I know, but if my dad finds out, we're dead."

Ilyse said, "Don't."

The girls returned to their fathers and Jenn said, "No, Daddy, we didn't do it. I don't know who did. Right, Robin?"

Robin said, "Right," but she felt very peculiar. She hated lying to her father.

Howard sighed. "Well, in any event, I think this playdate is over. Charlie, I'm going to ask you to take your girls home."

Charlie said, "Okay, but first I want to see their hands, and I want you to see them. Robin, Jennifer, show me your hands, please!"

The twins showed their father their hands. They were red, having been scrubbed clean.

Jennifer said, "We were digging outside, Daddy, and we washed them." Charlie said, "I see that. A lot more throughly than usual, too. Well come on, Robin, Jennifer. We have to go home now and then we have a lot to talk about. Howard, please let me know what the cost of re-surfacing will be, and if Ilyse has any more to say about this."

"Okay, Charlie, I will. Sorry for the trouble."

The two men shook hands. Howard watched Charlie walk down the path toward the street.

"Daddy? Why would you pay for the driveway?" Jenn asked.

"Yeah, we didn't do anything," Robin said.

Then Charlie had an idea. He took each twin by the hand and led them onto the ruined driveway.

He said, "Girls, let's see something. Robin, please hold your hand tight above this hand print. Then you do the same please, Jennifer."

The girls looked at each other. Robin asked, "Uh, why, Daddy?" But when she saw her father frown, she did as she was told. Then Jennifer did the same. And miracle of all miracles, their hands fit the mold exactly. Charlie was not too surprised.

Robin started to cry. Charlie looked back toward the Rockwin's house. Howard was standing in the doorway, watching them.

Charlie said, "Robin! Do you have anything to tell us, right now? If you wait any longer, things will just get worse."

Sobbing, Robin said, "Daddddy! We're sorry. We lied to you."

Charlie sighed. He looked at Jennifer.

She said, "But Daddy, Ilyse made us promise not to tell."

At that point, they looked back at the house. They didn't see Mr. Rockwin, but heard him call Ilyse's name. The girls knew she was going to be in as big of trouble as they were, and they were glad for that.

Charlie was furious. He had a feeling the girls were involved somehow, but they had said they weren't. He always gave them a chance to come clean, but this time they had lied. He absolutely hated that.

He said, "All right, now as soon as Mr. Rockwin comes out, I want the FULL story. No more lies. You two are already in enough trouble."

They watched as Mr. Rockwin dragged Ilyse outside. They all stood on the path and the front steps.

Jennifer began, "Well, Daddy, we all did it, and Ilyse said to pretend that we didn't, so she wouldn't get into trouble."

"Yeah, 'cause her daddy told her to stay away from the driveway, but she said it would be fun to write in it," Robin added.

"Yeah, and she wrote her name but then said she was going to say that we did it, and we didn't want her to, but then she said, she was gonna say it anyway," Jenn continued.

Robin said, "Yeah, and then she said we could pretend someone else did it."

Charlie was frowning. "Did you agree to all this? And did you help mark up the driveway?"

Jennifer hesitated, then nodded. "Yes, Daddy, we made the handprints and footprints, but we didn't agree to her plan: she made us. She said she would tell something that wasn't true about us, if we didn't listen."

Ilyse spoke up then. She shouted, "That's not true!" But everyone standing there knew that it was.

Charlie turned to the twins. "Well, she might threaten, but she can't make you do something. You could always have gotten Mr. Rockwin, or come home for me. You two are still in trouble."

Then he turned back to Mr. Rockwin. "Well, Howard, it looks like a joint project. We can talk about things later. Now I need to get these two home and I expect you want to discuss things with Ilyse."

Howard remarked, "Yes, I do, thanks, Charlie. Girls, I hope the next time you play at our house, there won't be any trouble."

"Yes, sir," Jenn said quietly.

Robin echoed her sister. "Yes, sir."

Charlie took the twin's hands, and the three of them walked quietly home. It was only a block away. The girls tried to walk very slowly, but Charlie dragged them inside. He pointed to the living room couch, and they sat.

Charlie sat down facing the girls. He sighed. "Okay, girls, I am very disappointed in you two. Do you have any idea what you have done?"

Jennifer said, "We're sorry, Daddy. It was so much fun. And Ilyse said we wouldn't get in trouble for it, and we believed her. But we didn't know she was gonna blame us."

Robin spoke up. "We should have just told you the truth. huh?"

Charlie nodded. "Yes, you should have. Lying is always bad, and gets you in worse trouble. You know that. I'm not happy that Ilyse suggested it to you, but I am even less happy that you went along. The same goes for messing up the driveway. You know it will have to be re-done now? That is expensive."

Robin said, "Yes, Daddy."

"Yes, sir," Jennifer said. Then she asked, "Are you gonna punish us, Daddy?" She already knew the answer.

"Yes, I AM going to punish you. You are both going to be spanked, and for lying to me, you are both getting a mouth soaping. And I think your next two weeks' allowances will go towards the cost of the repairs."

Jennifer was about to protest, but Robin nudged her. "Yes, sir."

Robin said, "Okay, but Daddy?"

"Yes, Robin?"

"I'm sorry about what we did, and that we lied to you. I knew it was wrong, but I went along with them, 'cause I didn't want to be a party pooper."

"Well, that is not a good reason to do something wrong, although it can be tempting. When you do something that you know is wrong, you get in trouble, like now. I am glad that you are sorry about it, though."

Charlie turned to Jennifer, "Do you have anything else to say?"

"No, Daddy."

"Okay, then come with me. Robin, you wait here. I will come back for you when I'm ready."

Charlie led Jennifer to his bedroom. He removed all of Lisa's clothes from the big red chair and sat down. The twins called it the "spanking chair". He stood Jennifer in front of him and had her face him.

"Jennifer, do you understand what you did wrong, and why I am going to punish you?"

Jennifer hung her head and mumbled, "Yes, Daddy."

Charlie raised her head so that she was looking right at him. "Then tell me, please, so I am sure that you are clear about it."

Jenn cried, "Oh, Daddy, do I hafta? I hate this part!"

"I think it helps you to understand better, and remember longer. So yes, you do have to. Unless you want to be in even bigger trouble, young lady."

Jenn shook her head back and forth. "Okay, we wrote on the driveway, and then we lied about it, and then we lied again. I know we're not supposed to lie," she paused. "I'm sorry, Daddy."

"That's right. I'm glad you are sorry about what you did, but you are about to be even sorrier."

With that, Charlie pulled down Jenn's pants and panties and laid her over his lap. He raised his hand and began to spank.

<Smack> <Smack> <Smack> <Smack> <Smack>

Jennifer cried, "OW! Dadddy! I'm sorrrrry!"

Charlie continued the spanking and the lecture began. <Smack> "You will not <Smack> damage other people's property. <Smack> <Smack> And above all, <Smack> you will not <Smack> ever <Smack> ever <Smack> lie to me. <Smack> Is that clear, <Smack> Jennifer Lynn?" <Smack>

"Yes, Daddy, it is. I'm so sorry. I'll try harder, I promise."

<Smack> <Smack> <Smack> "All right, your spanking is over," Charlie said, pulling her to her feet. He pulled her into a hug and said, "I love you, baby."

"I love you, too, Daddy," Jenn cried, holding on tight. "I'm so, so sorry, really, Daddy! I don't know why we, I mean, I keep messing up."

Charlie held Jennifer while she cried. "Well, that's the way it is sometimes. That's one of the reasons I am here, to set you straight when you do mess up."

Charlie continued to hold Jenn firmly, while she calmed down. Then he said, "Now come along, Jenn, we have an appointment with a bar of soap."

"Yes, Daddy," Jenn said. She followed Charlie into the bathroom.

Charlie had Jennifer sit on the closed toilet lid. He placed the soap in her mouth and told her he would be right back. He walked back to the living room. Robin was laying on the couch, crying softly.

"Well, Robin, it is your turn now. Come along."

Robin followed her father to his bedroom. He sat on the chair and said, "Tell me what you did wrong please, and why I am going to punish you."

Robin was already crying. And even though she was eleven years old, she put her hands up for her father to pick her up. "Dadddy! I'm sorrrry!"

Charlie could see that she was hysterical. He pulled her into his lap and hugged and cuddled her.

"I understand that you are sorry, but you know that you still have to be punished. But soon it will be over, and I will still love you. You know that, right?" he asked gently.

Robin nodded. "But, Daddy, I didn't mean it. I didn't want to lie about it. They made me!" she cried.

Charlie turned Robin to face him. "Oh? And how did they do that? Did someone hold a gun to your head? They may have urged you, Robin, but they couldn't make you. You chose to go along."

"I know! But Daddy, I'm really, really sorry. Please don't spank me. I know what I did wrong. I, I, we shouldn't have gone on the wet driveway, and we shouldn't have lied about it afterward, first to Mr. Rockwin and then to you. I'm sorrrrrrry! " she cried.

Charlie said, "I know you are, lovey, and it is good that you are sorry about what you did. But I already punished your sister and I am going to punish you. You've been spanked before; it isn't the end of the world -- although I hope it will be the end of this kind of behavior."

"Yes, Daddy, it will be. I promise," Robin said.

"All right then."

Charlie gently pushed Robin off his lap, and stood her in front of him. He pulled down her pants and panties and lifted her over his lap. He started to spank right in the middle of her bottom.

<Smack> <Smack> <Smack> <Smack> <Smack>

Robin began to cry after the first spank. "OW, Daddy!"

<Smack> "You will not <Smack> mess things up. <Smack>

<Smack> And <Smack> you will not <Smack> ever <Smack> lie to me. <Smack> Is that <Smack> clear, <Smack> young lady?" <Smack>

"Yes, Daddy, I'm sorry. I told them we shouldn't. I'm really sorry," Robin cried.

<Smack> <Smack> <Smack>

"All right, Robin, your spanking is over."

He pulled Robin up and into a hug: the same as he did for Jennifer.

Robin hugged Charlie hard, and quietly asked, "Daddy, do you still love me?" She knew the answer, but felt she needed to hear it.

Charlie turned Robin around so that he was sure she would hear what he had to say. He knew that a spanking was powerful. The girls always needed to be reassured after a spanking, though.

"Oh, yes, Robin. I still love you very much and I always will no matter WHAT you do. I want that to be VERY clear."

"I guess I know, Daddy, but I like to hear you say it. Am I forgiven for what I did? I'll apologize to Mr. Rockwin again later or tomorrow, if you want."

"Yes. We will go down together to speak to him in a little bit. But you still have a mouthsoaping to come, and it is time. Come with me."

Reluctantly, Robin followed Charlie to the bathroom. He let Jenn rinse from the soap. Then he washed off the soap and placed it in Robin's mouth and told her to close up.

"Keep that in there. I will be right back," Charlie warned Robin. He knew he didn't have to worry.

He took Jennifer's hand and led her up to her room. "Jenn, baby, I want you to know that you are forgiven. But we are all going down to apologize to Mr. Rockwin in a little while, understand?"

"Okay, Daddy."

Charlie helped Jenn lay down on her bed on her stomach. He cuddled her very briefly and said, "Now, you lay down for a little while, okay?"

"Okay. Daddy? Do you think Ilyse got in trouble, too?"

Charlie nodded. "Yes. I am sure she did. Mr Rockwin seemed to be pretty mad at her."

Charlie went back and let Robin rinse from the soap. He gave her a big hug and cuddled her a bit. Then he suggested that she take a short nap, too.

"We will all visit Mr. Rockwin when you wake up."

An hour later, Robin and Jennifer came downstairs. Charlie was in the living room watching t.v.

"Daddy? Jenn and I are ready to go now, if you want," Robin announced.

Charlie looked up. "Yes, that would be good. Thank you for being good and coming to me as soon as you were up."

He took the girls by the hand, one on each side of him, and they walked down to the Rockwin's house.

When they got there, Charlie knocked on the door. Howard came and opened it up to them. He was surprised. "Charlie? I didn't expect to see you back here. Girls!"

Charlie said, "Howard, the girls have something to say to you. Robin! Jennifer! Go on."

Robin took a deep breath and said, "Mr. Rockwin? I'm very sorry that we messed up your driveway. I have no excuse, but I promise you it will never happen again."

"Yes, and I promise, too," Jenn said. "And you don't have to worry, 'cause our daddy punished us."

Charlie smiled. He was proud of his girls. He knew they were sorry and now that they had been punished, they were forgiven. He knew that it took a lot for them to apologize to Ilyse's father.

He added, "And they will be making a contribution to repaying the cost of the damage. You and I will need to talk later about amounts, Howard. Well Thank you,, this is what we came to say. I apologize for the trouble."

As they turned to go, Ilyse came to the door. Her eyes and nose were all red. "Daddy?" she said. Then she saw Charlie and the twins. "Oh, I didn't know anyone was here."

The twins just looked at each other and smiled.

The end.
