The Dean's First Impressions

This is the Conclusion of the Dean's first impressions . . .

Part 2

After that Mary made it a point of walking by the Dean's office, even though there were no classes in Old Main and no real excuse she could give to be up on his floor. She would always glance in the direction of the open door. The office had a small reception area and the Dean's door was farther back. She would occasionally be able to see all the way into his office, but usually the door was closed. She always made it a point to study any of the girls coming out of his office. Occasionally she would see one with a red face or red eyes, a couple of times she even saw someone in the reception area coming out of his room, the girl's hand on the seat of her skirt rubbing furiously. Every time she could feel her face flush, her heart beat faster, she was curious and scared at the same time.

One afternoon she was walking down the hall and noticed the Dean in front of her walking with someone just about to go into his office. She walked slower, and heard the door to his inner office close. She walked by his open reception door slowly; the office was empty. She looked around for his secretary Helen and went in, slowly she walked up to the door and put her ear against it. Nothing, she saw a keyhole and tried to look in. Nothing, but on the lower part of the door it was possible to hear what was going on inside. Not actual voices but at least mumbling. She listened carefully, she could tell his deeper voice from the high squeaky voice of the girl. Then silence followed by a POP!

“Oh my god,” she though he's paddling her! She heard several POP’s, followed by what she thought was crying. She crouched closer to hear what was going on. A noise behind Mary (just the creak of a beam) startled her and she jerked up right into the doorknob.

Inside Andy watched from close to the door. The girl who had just been over the desk was Shelly Waiters. She was an attractive 11th grader with wavy red hair and bright green eyes. Shelly was a bright, cheerful girl who was constantly talking in class. It was that very talking that had earned her the trip across the Dean's desk. Now she was standing facing his desk her hands under her skirt trying to rub the sting of 4 swats out of her red cheeks. Her face was red and tears were still coming down her freckled cheeks.

He was standing by the door giving her a minute to gather herself and stop crying. He had already given her a tissue, and a hug, and told her to take her time to compose herself. Just then Andy heard a distinct bang on the doorknob. Poor Shelly was oblivious to the noise. He quickly said, "I'll be back in a second Shelly,” and opened the door to his reception area.

He was met with the sight of Mary Catherine in the middle of the reception area, face flushed, head down, hand rubbing the top of her head, eyes shut tight. He closed the door and quickly summed up the situation. Mary had been by the door and had evidently bumped her head, hard, against the doorknob. He frowned, "Mary?" She opened one eye, still rubbing her head. "Yes?" she said. "What happened? And what are you doing here?" As the pain in Mary's head subsided somewhat her panic level rose, how was she ever going to explain this?

Andy had already come to his conclusion. Mary had come in and was listening against the door, either she tripped or something happened to cause her to hit her head against the door. What exactly had caused her to bang her head he wasn't sure, but he was certain she was listening against the door.

He could see Mary grasping for an explanation. "Well . . . see . . . I . . ." she said rubbing her head. "Come here, let me see," he said gently. She slowly walked up to him and took her hand away from her head. Andy touched the sore spot lightly and inspected the damage. A small bump was forming but no skin had been broken. "Don't worry," he said, "it's not bleeding, but to avoid a bruise we should get some ice on it." "Do you feel dizzy Sport?" he asked. "No . . . no Ssssirrr,” she stammered. He could tell the fear was kicking in by this point. "Sit down and wait here." He guided Mary to one of the chairs in the reception area and then walked back inside.

After a minute or so the door opened and Shelly Waiters walked out. Her face was red and tear stained, her hands still rubbing the seat of her skirt. The Dean was behind her paddle in hand. Shelly saw Mary and thinking she was next said under her breath as she passed, "good luck, he's really swinging that thing today." The Dean didn't hear the comment, he just saw Mary's face turn bright red. As Shelly walked out he gestured for Mary to come in. Mary felt like her legs were suddenly made of rubber as she walked in.

It was a very large room, dominated by a huge oak desk. There was a fireplace, bookshelves everywhere and a long sofa and chairs by the fireplace. The windows behind it went clear across the length of the room. Mary looked up at the windows in awe. Many of them were stained glass and the streaming sunlight threw a splash of color across the large room. The Dean placed his paddle (the infamous Mighty Thor) on the desk and walked into a room off to the side.

A minute later he returned with a ice pack. He gestured to Mary to sit down and placed it on her head. "Ouch!" she said. "I know it kind of hurts but believe me, it will save you from having a bump on your head." The Dean leaned against the desk and crossed his arms. Looking down he said, "So do you mind telling me how that happened?"

"Umm, well . . . umm see," Mary searched for an explanation. She thought and then said "Well, I was in the hallway and I had a quarter and I was playing with it, you know flipping it up and it dropped and rolled to your door. When I picked it up I guess I wasn't paying attention and I hit the doorknob."

"Hmmm," was the Dean's only response. He immediately knew the story wasn't true, he almost was about to ask her to see the quarter. But all that would do would be to let her know that he knew she was lying. If he did that he certainly couldn't let her go without punishing her. After all he knew that students, freshmen especially, had to be taught that actions have consequences. Once they know that no consequences exist, word travels very fast to the other girls. So he decided to keep quiet, the bump on her head he felt was punishment enough for today.

Besides he could tell she was very, very scared. As he studied her he could tell she was just waiting to see what fate was to befall her. No he thought, she knew what fate was coming and she probably thought it was just a matter of time before he put her across the desk for the paddle.

He had known many other freshmen girls like Mary, most had never been paddled before. So they have this mixture of curiosity and fear of what happens in here. Usually the first trip in for the paddle cures them of the curiosity and they steer clear of the office the rest of the year. In this case though he thought having Mary watch Shelly come out of the office had given Mary a very clear picture of the fate that awaited girls in his office.

He got up and took the ice pack from her head. "Hmmm . . . should be fine in a few minutes." He placed the ice pack on the desk. "Now . . . " He could see Mary tense up, she took in a deep breath as to steel herself for what was to come. He picked up the paddle and said "Stand up Mary.." Slowly she stood, breathing harder, her eyes were starting to slightly water now. He turned and reached over and wrote a short note on a post-it. When he turned back Mary was already against the desk about to lean over. "Mary I need you to take this down the hall for me."

"Yes sir." Mary answered as if in a trance and continued to lean over the desk. "Mary!" he said, "I need you to take this note down the hall for me to Ms. Mckay." The words sunk into Mary and it snapped her back to reality. "Umm..oh..yes sir." She quickly took the note from his hand, not knowing what to think. "Don't forget the ice pack, you can bring it back tomorrow." "You . . . you mean I don't have to come back?" "No" he said putting the ice pack on her head and placing her hand on it, "here hold it for at least another 10 minutes or so." The color was coming back into Mary's face and it seemed her breathing was returning to normal as she headed for the door.

Andy was going to let her go but couldn't resist, "One more thing Mary, " he said, "let me see the quarter you were chasing. Mary's face turned white, it was all he needed to know. He walked up to her and placing her hand on his shoulder said, "Next time Mary you'll be walking out of here needing an ice pack somewhere else..." he turned her and gave her a quick, sharp shot on the seat of her skirt with the paddle. Mary turned bright red and gave a whispered, "yyyyyes Sir." Then she was out the door . . .
